Q&A with Trivia Host, Jared
I caught up with Tucker & Co Trivia host, Jared Vento, to learn all about Trivia Night at the Bakery Cafe- will we see you next month?
About you:
How long have you been running trivia and what first sparked your interest?
This is a nice change of pace, as I am usually the one asking the questions! I started running trivia 3 years ago. I have run events for friends but never did a public trivia night. I initially became interested in hosting it because I enjoyed the thought of a free activity people could do with their friends and family.
How did you get involved with Tucker and Co?
Funny enough, Tucker&Co. DJed my wedding almost 8 years ago. Little known fact but they used offer DJ and sound services for events!
We enjoyed working with them. Heidi and Isaac are both positive and authentic, which naturally brings people together. They work hard to make a difference in the community, which attracted me to work with them.
How do you come up with the trivia questions?
If you talk to most trivia hosts they will probably tell you about their well-crafted strategy to diversify questions and cultivate ideas from pop culture, calendar events, and certain source material.
Well, I’m not like most trivia hosts . I find questions via YouTube videos, Jeopardy, podcasts, certain magazines. Really, wherever I can get questions. I try to craft questions that people will have fun with and remember.
“Is a group of cats called a clowder or a cuddle?”
“In the movie “Bambi,” what is the name of his skunk friend?”
“What is the only food that never goes bad due to its low water content and high sugar concentration?”
Are there other spots we can find you for more trivia!?
For now, you can only find me hosting trivia at Tucker&Co. Bakery.
I also help run a community board game night in Dillsburg every Wednesday starting at 6:30pm. We typically run games and other free events for adults at Calvary Church, near the library.
Logistics Run-down:
Are there generally set categories or is every night unique?
I always do two themed categories: a music and a puzzle round. The other two rounds are 10 questions each of general trivia.
I tend to ask questions about geography, science, movies, history, Disney, food, and technology. I limit the number of questions on sports and pop culture.
A lot of people avoid trivia because they don’t think they’re smart enough or won’t know any answers; how do you handle that?
I’ve been to trivia where I barely knew any of the answers. It usually isn’t fun for me.
When I host, I want participants to be able to answer about half of the questions on their own, most as a group, and then the last portion as challenge questions.
How many people are on a team?
We would prefer a max of 4 per team but have made exceptions for groups up to 6. We may ask you to split up if your group is larger than that.
Can you come to Trivia if you don’t have a whole team to bring?
Absolutely, I’ve seen plenty of people play on their own or in a group of 2. Because it’s a comfortable and smaller setting I’ve even seen strangers join together on teams (and then win!).
Do you need to register in advance?
You don’t have to… but it is preferred. It lets us save a spot for you and guarantees a reservation for your team.
Are there prizes?
Yes! In addition to being able to enjoy a nice meal, there are several gift cards, baked goods, and other products given out to the top teams.
Is there anything else you want to share about trivia?
Most people don’t know that one of the reasons I host trivia is to help donate extra funds to help support individuals through their cancer treatment. That’s been the case over the last three years. Tucker and Co. has been kind enough to make a sizable donation towards the American Cancer Society and other individuals affected by cancer.
What more could I ask for? A free community event, that brings people together, lets them share an experience together, good food, prizes, fun, and it all goes towards a good cause.
If you haven’t been to trivia night, consider stopping by sometime.
Trivia night happens once a month from 6-8 pm at the Bakery Cafe! The Kitchen is open for food from 6-6:30 and Trivia begins at 6:30 pm! Sign- up on our website under events.
